Choosing an exhaust cutout
What is an electric exhaust cutout?
An electric exhaust cutout opens or closes an alternate path in the exhaust using an electric actuator. Operation and available controls depend on the kit. See how electronic exhaust cutouts work.
What is a OneTouch exhaust cutout?
OneTouch is Granatelli's push-button exhaust-cutout control system. Confirm the switch and wiring included with the kit you select. Browse Granatelli Motor Sports exhaust cutout kits.
What does auto-stop do on a cutout motor?
The auto-stop function is designed to stop the actuator at the end of its travel on applicable kits. Follow the kit instructions rather than forcing the valve past its limits.
What round exhaust-cutout sizes do you offer?
Granatelli offers select round cutouts in 2.25-inch, 2.5-inch, 3-inch, 3.5-inch and 4-inch sizes. Choose a size matching the specific exhaust installation. Not sure which you need? Read What Size Exhaust Cutout Do I Need?
Do you offer an oval exhaust cutout?
Yes. Granatelli offers select oval exhaust-cutout components; check the specific product dimensions and package contents before ordering. See the oval exhaust cutouts.
What is the difference between a slip-fit and weld-in cutout?
A slip-fit connection joins compatible tubing with an overlapping fit, while a weld-in configuration is permanently joined by welding. Select the kit that matches your exhaust fabrication plan.
Are cutout turndowns included with every kit?
Package contents vary by cutout part number. Read the listing to confirm whether turndowns, wiring, clamps and other accessories are included.
Can I install a 3-inch cutout on 2.5-inch tubing?
A size transition or custom fabrication may be required; a mismatched cutout is not a direct fit. Match the exhaust's measured outer diameter and the kit's connection specifications.
What is the warranty period for your electric exhaust cutouts?
Granatelli electric exhaust cutouts have a one-year limited warranty, subject to the applicable product terms. Contact support with proof of purchase and the part number for a claim.
Installing an exhaust cutout
Can I install an exhaust cutout on a stock exhaust system?
Potentially, if there is sufficient space and the tubing size and layout suit the selected kit. Check local road-use requirements and have the exhaust placement inspected before fabrication.
Where should an electric cutout be installed?
Choose a location with adequate ground clearance and room for the valve, motor, wiring and service access. Follow the kit's orientation and heat-clearance instructions. Our guide covers this in detail: Where Should You Install an Exhaust Cutout?
Can the cutout motor point toward the road?
Avoid any orientation that exposes the actuator to impact, debris or water beyond its installation requirements. Confirm the allowed mounting orientations in the kit instructions.
How much room does a cutout need to open?
Clearance depends on the cutout size, valve style and turndown or pipe attachment. Check the dimensions and move the valve through its full travel before final welding.
Can I mount an electric cutout next to a catalytic converter?
Only if the exact installation is allowed by applicable law and meets the product's heat and placement requirements. Never use a cutout to bypass required emissions controls on a road vehicle.
Should the cutout actuator be supported by the exhaust tubing alone?
Follow the kit's mounting design and provide adequate exhaust support. Excessive vibration or the weight of unsupported piping can stress the valve assembly.
Should I test both cutout valves before welding the final exhaust position?
Yes. Temporarily position and cycle each valve as the kit allows to verify full travel, connector access and chassis clearance before permanent fabrication.
How do I prevent cutout fasteners from loosening?
Install and torque hardware as directed, then inspect it after heat cycles. Use only a thread-locking product suitable for the location if the instructions recommend one.
Where should the cutout controller be mounted?
Choose a secure location compatible with the kit's environmental and temperature limits, protected from exhaust heat, moisture and mechanical damage. Follow its mounting instructions.
Wiring and controls
Should I disconnect the battery before wiring a cutout?
Follow the kit and vehicle electrical safety instructions; disconnecting the battery is generally appropriate before modifying vehicle wiring. Use the specified fuse and wire routing.
Can I power a Granatelli cutout directly from an unprotected battery lead?
No. Install power and circuit protection as directed by the exact kit instructions. An unprotected wire can create a fire risk if it shorts.
Can I operate two cutout valves from one control box?
Select Granatelli control-box configurations support two valves; confirm the controller and kit part numbers before connecting a second actuator.
Does a wireless cutout remote eliminate the need for the vehicle control box?
No. The remote communicates with the system's compatible controller; it does not replace required motor power, wiring or circuit protection. See wireless remotes and switches.
Can I use a generic polarity-reversing switch with a OneTouch cutout motor?
Do not replace the supplied control logic without confirming compatibility. Automatic-stop and motor-protection functions may depend on the designated controller.
Can I extend the wires to an exhaust cutout motor?
Use an extension only where permitted by the kit instructions, with suitable conductor size, insulation and sealed connections. Excess voltage drop or poor joints can affect motor operation.
Why should cutout wiring be kept away from the driveshaft?
The driveshaft and suspension can move or rotate into nearby wiring. Secure the harness clear of all moving parts with enough slack for suspension travel.
Why should the exhaust cutout wiring have a drip loop where appropriate?
A downward loop can help prevent water from traveling along a wire into a connector or enclosure. It supplements, rather than replaces, properly sealed electrical connections.
How do I keep an exhaust cutout's wiring away from a hot turndown?
Route the harness on the protected side of the chassis, use specified clamps and maintain the kit's heat clearance. Avoid routing near the valve outlet or other hot exhaust surfaces.
Operation and troubleshooting
Can I stop my cutout partway open?
Control features differ by kit, so use only the operating modes specified for your switch and actuator. Do not force or hold the motor against an end stop.
My cutout is not fully closing; what should I check?
With the exhaust cool, inspect for debris, interference, loose hardware and binding. Check the wiring and run the full open-close procedure in the product instructions.
How do I reseat a Granatelli cutout valve?
For applicable kits, cycle the valve fully open and fully closed three times as part of the recommended reseating check. If it still binds or leaks, stop and contact support.
What should I do if the exhaust cutout opens but its controller will not close it?
Allow the system to cool, check power and connections, and inspect for valve binding. Follow the kit's reseating procedure; stop if the actuator stalls or overheats.
Can exhaust backpressure hold an electric cutout valve partly open?
A valve that will not seat needs inspection for debris, alignment, actuator travel and mechanical damage. Do not assume backpressure is the only cause.
Why can a cutout motor stop early when the exhaust is hot?
Heat-related binding, hardware movement or an electrical fault may be involved. Record whether the issue occurs hot or cold and inspect the valve and wiring when safe.
What should I check when a cutout motor works with a bench supply but not in the vehicle?
Inspect the installed fuse, ground, switched power, controller and wiring under load. Use the kit's wiring diagram and avoid bypassing its protection circuits.
Why should I check voltage while the cutout motor is moving?
A circuit may read normal voltage at rest yet drop excessively under motor load. Follow the wiring diagram and use a qualified technician if electrical testing is unfamiliar.
What should I inspect if one cutout works but the second valve does not?
Check the second motor connector, its harness, controller channel and valve movement using the applicable diagnostic procedure. Do not swap wires between channels unless the kit instructions allow it.
Can a crushed motor harness cause an intermittent exhaust cutout?
Yes. A pinched or abraded harness can interrupt power or short to the exhaust. Repair or replace damaged wiring before further operation.
What should I inspect after driving through deep water with electric cutouts?
With the system powered off and cooled, inspect connectors, wiring and the actuator for water intrusion or corrosion. Follow the product's environmental limits before operating it again.
What should I send when requesting cutout troubleshooting?
Send the cutout and controller part numbers, installation photos, a short video of the fault, wiring details and whether the valve moves freely when cool.
What details should I include in a video of a cutout electrical fault?
Show the switch or remote command, which valve moves, any actuator sound and the controller indicator if present. Keep hands and the camera clear of hot or moving exhaust parts.
