About Granatelli ignition wires
What makes Granatelli Motor Sports ignition wires different?
Granatelli Motor Sports performance ignition wires are designed for extremely low electrical resistance while providing excellent EMI and RFI suppression. This helps deliver maximum available ignition energy to the spark plug.
Are Granatelli ignition wires zero-ohm wires?
Granatelli Motor Sports ignition wires are designed to provide near-zero resistance while maintaining the suppression needed for modern vehicle electronics.
What does zero-ohm mean on Granatelli ignition wires?
Zero-ohm describes the low-resistance design of select Granatelli ignition wires; it does not mean the entire ignition circuit has no resistance. Check the wire-set listing for its specifications and intended application. More detail: 0-Ohm vs Factory Spark Plug Wires: Does Resistance Matter?
What is the benefit of lower-resistance spark plug wires?
Lower resistance allows more ignition energy to reach the spark plug instead of being lost through the wire. This can improve ignition performance, throttle response, combustion efficiency, and overall engine operation.
Will Granatelli ignition wires increase horsepower?
Ignition wire upgrades can improve performance when the existing ignition system is limiting spark energy. Results will vary depending on the engine, modifications, tune, ignition system, and condition of the vehicle.
Can Granatelli ignition wires improve fuel economy?
Improved ignition efficiency may help improve fuel economy in some applications. Actual mileage improvements depend heavily on the vehicle, engine condition, driving style, tune, and operating conditions. More detail: Can 0-Ohm Spark Plug Wires Improve MPG?
Can I install Granatelli ignition wires on a stock engine?
Yes, when you choose a wire set listed for your engine and ignition configuration. Confirm the connectors and boot angles before ordering.
Can I use Granatelli wires with factory ignition coils?
Yes, when you select the correct Granatelli Motor Sports wire set for your vehicle and ignition configuration.
Can I use your wires with aftermarket coils?
Possibly, if both ends have compatible terminals and the wire length and boot style fit. Check the specifications for both products before ordering.
Do your ignition wires require a different spark-plug gap?
A wire change alone generally does not set the correct gap. Use the gap appropriate for your engine, plugs, tune and boost level.
Do you offer different ignition wire colors?
Select wire families are available in multiple colors, depending on the part number. Check the live product options for the available color and boot combination.
Ceramic boots and heat protection
What are Granatelli ceramic ignition wires?
Granatelli ceramic ignition wires use ceramic spark plug boot ends designed for extremely high-temperature applications where conventional spark plug boots may be exposed to excessive exhaust or header heat. See the LS ceramic boot spark plug wires.
What is a ceramic spark-plug boot?
A ceramic boot is a high-temperature spark-plug end intended for applications with tight header or exhaust clearance. It does not eliminate the need to route the wire away from direct contact with hot components.
What temperature are your ceramic spark-plug boots rated for?
Select Granatelli ceramic spark-plug boots are rated for up to 2,000°F; verify the rating of your specific wire set. The wire jacket and other components may have different limits.
What temperature is the high-temperature protective sleeve rated for?
Select Granatelli protective sleeves are rated for up to 1,200°F, depending on the product. Check the listing for the sleeve supplied with your set.
Are Granatelli ignition wires good for headers?
Yes. Granatelli high-temperature and ceramic boot ignition wire options are especially useful for vehicles where the spark plug wires run close to headers or exhaust components.
Can ignition wires rest against headers?
Avoid continuous direct contact, even with ceramic boots or high-temperature sleeving. Secure and route the wire away from headers and moving components whenever possible.
Do ceramic boots prevent every type of heat damage?
No. Ceramic boots protect the plug-end area, but wires and other boots can still be damaged by heat, abrasion or direct contact with exhaust components.
Should ceramic plug boots be inspected after the first heat cycle?
Yes. After the engine cools, inspect each boot for full seating, header clearance and cracks; also check the cable jacket and heat sleeve for contact damage.
What should I do if a ceramic boot is chipped before installation?
Do not install a chipped or cracked ceramic boot. Photograph the damage and contact Granatelli Motor Sports with the wire-set part number and purchase details.
Can ceramic plug boots be cleaned with harsh solvents?
Avoid aggressive solvents and abrasive cleaning unless specified for the product. Use the maintenance method provided with your wire set and inspect for physical damage after cleaning.
Do plug-wire separators replace the need for heat protection?
No. Separators organize the wires but do not guarantee adequate exhaust clearance or protect every component from radiant heat. Use the correct high-temperature parts and routing.
Choosing the right wire set
How do I know which Granatelli ignition wire set fits my vehicle?
Search by year, make, model, engine, or part number on GranatelliMotorSports.com. If you are unsure, contact technical support before ordering. Browse ignition wire sets.
How do I find the correct ignition wire set for my LS engine?
Identify your LS engine, coil location, spark-plug boot clearance and connector type, then compare them with the product's fitment and part number. Engine swaps may require measuring wire length.
Will an LS truck wire set fit my LS car engine?
Not automatically: coil brackets, routing and required wire lengths can differ between trucks and cars. Match the part number to your actual installed ignition layout.
Can I use a wire set for a different model year if the engine is the same?
Engine identity alone does not confirm fitment; verify the terminal style, coil layout, boot clearance and length. Use the listed part number for the installed configuration.
Can I mix ignition wire boot styles on one engine?
Only use boot styles and wire sets compatible with each cylinder's plug and coil connections. If header clearance varies, contact technical support with photos and the part numbers you plan to use.
Why might the wrong plug-end boot angle cause an installation problem?
The wrong angle can force the wire against a header or bracket or prevent full seating. Select the boot orientation that fits your actual cylinder-head and exhaust layout.
What photos help confirm the correct ceramic boot angle?
Provide a photo looking down at the spark plug beside the header, a view of the coil location and a photo of the current boot and terminal. Include the engine and wire-set part number.
How do I measure a replacement spark-plug wire?
Measure the routing path between the coil/distributor terminal and spark plug, allowing for bends, heat clearance and engine movement. Confirm whether the product length is measured end-to-end or by wire only before ordering.
Does Granatelli make custom-length ignition wires?
Custom ignition wire applications may be available. Contact Granatelli Motor Sports technical support with your engine, ignition configuration, desired lengths, and boot requirements.
What information should I provide for a custom ignition wire fitment question?
Send your engine type, coil/distributor model, spark-plug type, routing measurements, header clearance and photos of both terminal connections. Include any existing Granatelli part numbers.
Routing and installation
Do ignition wires need to be routed away from moving parts?
Yes. Secure them clear of belts, pulleys, steering components, sharp edges and hot exhaust parts to prevent abrasion and heat damage.
How can I prevent spark-plug wires from rubbing on an LS coil bracket?
Route the wire through the intended clearance path and secure it with heat-resistant separators or supports. Leave enough slack for engine movement without allowing the jacket to rub on a sharp bracket edge.
Why should I keep an ignition wire away from a sharp valve-cover edge?
Engine vibration can abrade the jacket on a sharp edge and create a path for spark leakage. Use a protected routing path and suitable wire separators.
What is the correct way to route wires around a turbo hot side?
Use the most direct safe route away from turbine housings and exhaust tubing, with appropriate high-temperature protection and secure supports. Measure clearance at operating temperature and throughout engine movement.
Should a replacement wire follow the factory loom path on a modified engine?
Use the factory path only if it maintains safe clearance with the current headers, coils and accessories. After modifications, a revised supported route may be necessary.
Can a spark-plug wire be too short even when both terminals connect?
Yes. A wire under tension can pull on a terminal during engine movement and become damaged. Choose a wire that follows a safe route with adequate slack and clearance.
Can extra-long ignition wires be coiled tightly to hide the excess?
Avoid tightly coiling or sharply bending ignition wires. Use the correct length and route the excess without contact with hot, sharp or moving components.
What is a safe bend radius for Granatelli ignition wires?
Do not assume one universal bend-radius specification. Route each wire in broad curves without kinks and contact support with the exact part number if clearance is unusually tight.
Can I trim a preterminated ignition wire to shorten it?
Do not cut a preterminated wire unless its product instructions specifically allow field termination. Cutting can damage the conductor or leave a terminal that cannot be reattached correctly.
How should I label ignition wires during an engine swap?
Mark each wire by cylinder and coil position before removing the original set, and verify the final routing against the engine's firing-order diagram. Do not rely on wire color to identify a cylinder.
How do I remove a spark-plug wire without damaging it?
Let the engine cool, grip the boot rather than pulling the cable and twist gently while removing it. Follow vehicle-specific service precautions around high-voltage ignition components.
How can I tell if an ignition wire is seated correctly?
The boot should engage the terminal securely without being stretched or contacting nearby components. If the connection feels loose, stop and verify the terminal and boot are the correct type.
Troubleshooting misfires
What should I check if a new ignition wire causes a misfire?
Confirm each wire is fully seated on the correct coil and plug, inspect routing and check for damaged terminals or incorrect length. Read trouble codes and inspect the plug and coil before attributing the misfire to the wire.
What should I check if a wire boot clicks into place but the cylinder still misfires?
Confirm the terminal is correctly matched and fully engaged, then inspect the plug, gap, cylinder-specific wiring and coil. Read the stored trouble codes before moving components.
Why can a loose coil-end terminal cause an intermittent misfire?
An incompletely engaged connection can open or arc as the engine moves. With the ignition off, inspect terminal fit and reseat or replace damaged components.
How do I check a wire boot for carbon tracking?
With the ignition off and engine cool, inspect the boot and spark-plug insulator for thin dark tracking marks, cracks or burn paths. Replace damaged components and investigate the underlying plug or seating issue.
Can oil in a spark-plug well damage a coil boot or wire connection?
Yes. Oil contamination can interfere with a secure connection and accelerate deterioration. Repair the leak and clean or replace affected parts as required by the vehicle service procedure.
What should I inspect when a misfire appears only after the engine warms up?
Check wire routing and heat exposure, boot fit, plug condition and coil operation under the same conditions. Record the fault codes and avoid assuming the wire is the cause without testing.
