About Granatelli ignition coils
Does Granatelli Motor Sports make high-performance ignition coils?
Yes. Granatelli Motor Sports offers performance ignition coils for many Ford, GM, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, HEMI, and other applications. See the Granatelli Motor Sports ignition coil packs.
What are Granatelli Malevolent ignition coils?
Malevolent ignition coils are Granatelli Motor Sports high-performance ignition coils designed to provide increased ignition energy compared with many factory ignition systems.
What is the difference between Street Fighter, Pro Series and Malevolent coils?
These are different Granatelli ignition-coil product families intended for different engine and performance combinations. Match the specific coil part number to your vehicle and build rather than selecting by series name alone. Our guide walks through it: Which Granatelli Coil Pack Do I Need?
What are the benefits of upgraded ignition coils?
Depending on the application, upgraded coils can provide stronger ignition energy, improved spark stability, better performance under increased cylinder pressure, and improved operation with modified or forced-induction engines.
Will a performance ignition coil automatically add horsepower?
Not necessarily. Results depend on whether the existing ignition system limits spark performance and on the engine's tune and modifications.
How can I compare coil performance claims?
Compare the same engine, test conditions, measurement method and product part numbers. A voltage claim alone does not guarantee a particular horsepower gain.
Can a coil's printed voltage rating tell me the spark energy in my engine?
No. Headline voltage alone does not establish spark energy under all operating conditions. Compatibility, charging time, plug gap and cylinder pressure also matter.
How should I compare coils on a dyno?
Use the same vehicle, fuel, plugs, tune and test conditions, then perform repeatable baseline and follow-up runs. Treat results as specific to that test configuration rather than guaranteed gains. See an example: Ford 5.0L Ignition Coil Dyno Testing Explained.
Fitment and choosing a coil
Can performance coils be used on a stock vehicle?
Yes, where the exact part number is listed as compatible with the vehicle's factory ignition system. Verify connector style and engine fitment.
Can your coils support turbocharged or supercharged engines?
Select coil products are designed for modified and forced-induction applications, but suitability depends on the exact engine and setup. Check the coil listing and your spark-plug selection and gap.
How do I identify the correct coil for a Ford 2-valve engine?
Confirm the Mustang or other vehicle's model year, engine code and original coil connector, then match the listed Granatelli part number. A 2-valve and a 3-valve engine may require different coils. See the Ford coil packs.
Will a Ford 3-valve coil fit a 2-valve engine?
Do not assume interchangeability. Coil mounting, boots, connectors and ignition requirements can differ; use the application-specific part number.
Are Coyote ignition coils interchangeable across every model year?
No universal interchangeability should be assumed. Check engine generation, model year, connector, boot and the exact Granatelli application list.
How do I check whether a coil connector matches?
Compare the number, shape and keying of the vehicle connector with the exact product photos and fitment notes. Do not force a connector that does not fit.
Can an incorrect coil boot length prevent proper plug contact?
Yes. A boot or spring that does not reach the spark plug correctly can cause a poor connection. Match the complete coil assembly to the exact application.
What should I inspect if one new coil feels loose on its spark plug?
Check the correct boot, spring or terminal arrangement and confirm the coil matches the engine application. Do not force or modify an incompatible coil to make it fit.
What details should I send for a coil fitment question?
Provide year, make, model, engine, current coil part number and photos of the connector and mounting location. Note engine swaps and any aftermarket ignition controller.
Installation
Should the battery be disconnected before replacing coils?
Follow the vehicle's service procedure and ignition-system safety guidance. Work with the ignition switched off and never handle energized high-voltage components.
Do ignition coils need dielectric grease?
Follow the coil and vehicle manufacturer's installation instructions for any grease and its location. Do not put grease on electrical contact surfaces unless specified.
Should coil mounting fasteners be tightened using a universal torque value?
No. Use the vehicle or product-specific fastener specification; overtightening can damage mounting bosses while undertightening can allow movement.
Is it acceptable to install an ignition coil with a broken mounting ear?
No. An unsecured coil can lose position or stress its connector. Replace damaged hardware or the affected component and follow the specified mounting procedure.
Why should a coil connector latch be checked after installation?
A connector that is not fully latched may intermittently disconnect as the engine vibrates. With ignition off, verify the connector is undamaged and locked in place.
Can an ignition-coil connector be repaired with twisted-together wires?
No. Use a correctly specified automotive-grade repair method and pinout. Improvised splices may introduce resistance, shorts or intermittent ignition faults.
Should I change spark plugs when installing new coils?
Inspect the plugs for wear, deposits, damage and correct gap; replace them if needed. A faulty plug can cause misfires even with new coils.
Will Granatelli ignition coils work with factory spark plugs?
In most applications, yes. Spark plug type and gap should still be appropriate for your engine combination and power level.
Do I need to tune my vehicle after replacing stock coils?
A compatible direct-replacement coil alone does not usually require recalibration. Other engine modifications or persistent diagnostic codes may require a qualified tuner or technician.
Why should I keep the original coils until a new set has been tested?
Keeping serviceable original parts temporarily allows a controlled comparison if an installation or fitment issue arises. Store them cleanly and label each position.
Can excessive engine heat shorten ignition-coil life?
Excessive heat and poor mounting can stress ignition components. Address abnormal engine-bay temperatures and use the product intended for the installation environment.
Misfires and troubleshooting
What should I check after installing coils if the engine will not start?
Verify battery voltage, coil power and ground, fully latched connectors and correct part numbers. Read diagnostic codes and follow the vehicle service manual before replacing more components.
Why might an ignition-coil fuse blow immediately after replacement?
Possible causes include damaged wiring, a shorted connector or an incompatible installation. Stop replacing fuses repeatedly and have the circuit diagnosed using the correct wiring diagram.
Can I replace just one misfiring coil?
A correctly diagnosed failed coil can be replaced individually when the matching part is available. Confirm that plugs, wiring, injectors and mechanical issues are not the cause first.
How can I identify whether a misfire follows an ignition coil?
A qualified technician can compare cylinder-specific misfire data and, where the service procedure permits, move a compatible coil to another cylinder. Record the original location and never interchange incompatible coils.
Should I unplug ignition coils while the engine is running to find a misfire?
No. Avoid disconnecting energized ignition components. Use appropriate scan-tool diagnostics and the vehicle service procedure instead.
Does a misfire under acceleration always mean I need a higher-output coil?
No. Plug gap, fueling, wiring, compression, boost control and calibration can also cause misfires under load. Diagnose the actual cause before selecting an upgrade.
Can an incorrect spark-plug gap cause misfires under boost?
Yes. Increased cylinder pressure can make spark delivery more demanding, so plug type and gap should match the engine and tune.
Can a stronger coil fix a mechanical misfire?
No. Compression loss, fuel delivery problems or other mechanical faults need diagnosis independent of coil selection.
Are coil upgrades a substitute for fixing a lean tune?
No. A coil upgrade does not correct air-fuel, fuel-pressure or calibration problems; resolve engine-management issues separately.
Can a damaged coil boot cause a misfire?
Yes. Torn, contaminated or heat-damaged boots may allow spark leakage or poor contact; inspect the boot and plug well during diagnosis.
What can cause moisture to enter a coil-on-plug boot?
Damaged seals, cracked boots, improper seating or water in the plug well can admit moisture. Correct the source and inspect the coil, boot and spark plug for tracking or corrosion.
Can a spark-plug well full of coolant affect coil performance?
Yes. Liquid contamination can create electrical leakage and damage boots or connectors. Repair the source of the coolant and service contaminated components before further operation.
What should I check when a misfire occurs immediately after a plug change and coil reinstall?
Check plug gap and type, terminal contact, coil-boot condition and connector engagement. Compare the work performed with cylinder-specific trouble codes.
Can low battery voltage affect the operation of upgraded ignition coils?
Yes. Ignition and engine-management systems rely on proper supply voltage. Check charging-system health, battery terminals and power connections before blaming an upgraded coil.
Do aftermarket coils bypass the need for a healthy engine ground?
No. Poor grounds can affect ignition and ECU behavior regardless of the coils installed. Inspect the vehicle's original ground paths during diagnosis.
What information helps diagnose a cylinder-specific coil fault?
Provide the engine and coil part numbers, cylinder number, diagnostic codes, plug type and gap, and whether the fault appears at idle or under load.
