Ceramic vs. Kevlar Spark Plug Wire Boots: Which Granatelli Heat Protection Is Right for Your LS or LT?

By Joey Granatelli1 min read

Compare Granatelli ceramic-reinforced and Kevlar-boot ignition-wire options for headers, turbo systems and tight LS/LT engine bays.

The spark-plug boot often lives closer to the exhaust than any other part of the ignition wire. On an LS swap with tight headers or a turbo system with hot piping near the cylinder head, boot heat can become the reason an otherwise good wire fails.

Granatelli offers multiple heat-protection strategies, including ceramic-reinforced boots and Kevlar-protected wire options.

Why the Boot Gets So Hot

Headers concentrate radiant and conductive heat around the spark plug. On turbo systems, additional hot-side piping can reduce clearance even further. A boot can be damaged even when the main wire jacket is routed safely.

Granatelli Ceramic-Reinforced Boots

Current Granatelli ceramic wire products are listed for extreme-heat use, with specific ceramic-reinforced LS/LT models carrying 1000°F-plus ratings. Granatelli has also published ceramic-boot technology for very high-temperature performance applications.

Ceramic protection is attractive where the boot is extremely close to a header primary or other hot exhaust component.

Granatelli Kevlar Boot Options

Kevlar-protected versions add a flexible high-temperature protective layer around the boot/wire area. This can be useful where routing flexibility and abrasion resistance are important along with heat protection.

Choose Heat Protection by Clearance

  • Measure actual distance to the header or turbo piping
  • Check whether the boot touches metal under engine movement
  • Inspect routing with the engine hot and cold
  • Use separators to prevent wires from resting on exhaust
  • Choose the correct wire length so excess wire does not sag toward heat

Do Not Rely on the Boot Alone

Even a high-temperature boot has limits. Heat shields, header wrap strategy, wire separators and correct routing can dramatically reduce the temperature the ignition wire sees.

0-Ohm Performance Is Still Part of the Package

Granatelli ceramic and Kevlar performance wires are built around the company's low-resistance ignition technology, so the wire set is designed to address both electrical performance and the thermal environment.

The Bottom Line

Use ceramic-reinforced boots when extreme local heat is the primary problem, and consider Kevlar-protected options when you need a flexible high-temperature routing solution.

The best wire is the one that fits the engine correctly, keeps the boot away from direct exhaust contact and provides the electrical performance the ignition system requires.
