What Does a Blow-Off Valve Do?

While the wastegate controls boost from the exhaust side of the turbocharger, a blow-off valve controls compressed air on the intake side.

Under boost, the turbocharger compressor forces air through the charge piping, intercooler and toward the throttle body.

When the driver suddenly lifts off the throttle, the throttle blade closes while the turbocharger is still spinning. The compressed air that was moving toward the engine suddenly has nowhere to go.

A blow-off valve opens and gives that trapped pressurized air an escape path.

This helps reduce compressor surge and helps protect the turbocharger.

What Is Turbo Compressor Surge?

Compressor surge can occur when pressurized air encounters a closed throttle and begins moving back toward the turbocharger compressor.

Instead of allowing that pressure wave to push back against the compressor wheel, a properly sized BOV can release the excess pressure when the throttle closes.
